Little Heroes Board Members "Stand Up To Cancer"
On July 21, cancer survivors Lance Armstrong and Elizabeth Edwards taped a segment for a television fundraiser to fight cancer at U.S. Cellular Field. The clip for "Stand Up To Cancer," taped before a Chicago White Sox-Texas Rangers game, will be part of the one-hour, commercial-free fundraising special that airs Sept. 5 on ABC, CBS, and NBC.
Little Heroes board members, Kim Green and Jake Marzouk with their children, Ryan Green and Brandon Marzouk who are neuroblastoma survivors, appeared on the field with Armstrong and Edwards and will appear in the piece. Neuroblastoma survivor Abigail Mendoza appeared with Ryan and Brandon and was included in the event as well. Michelle McBride, a member of Little Heroes board, is one of the non-profit executives working with Stand Up to Cancer and organized the U.S. Cellular event.
Armstrong was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 1996 and went on to win a record seven straight Tour de France races. Edwards, the wife of former Sen. John Edwards, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004. She works on health care policy at a Washington think tank despite a recurrence of the cancer in early 2007.
"Hopefully it raises a lot of money, which is what we need," Armstrong said after the taping. "But more importantly it reminds people that this is the number-one killer in this country for people under the age of 85."
"Stand Up to Cancer" will feature musical performances and celebrity appeals. Organizers of the rare simultaneous broadcast will work with the American Association for Cancer Research to distribute the money. "I like a little challenge and a little fight," Armstrong said. "But we all picked a very big fight, and a tough fight. So we have to remind people that this will not be easy."
Little Heroes is a tax exempt 501(c)(3) organization.
