Saying Goodbye to a Dear Friend

The Friends For Steven Pediatric Cancer Foundation has lost a dear friend.  Donald Cameron was much more than a volunteer at the hospital.  The children loved him.  The parents enjoyed his company as well. Those of you who don't have families treating at the hospital might have met Don at past Family Fun Day events.  We sincerely regret that we could not provide Don and his family with the type of comfort that Don so frequently provided to us.

Donald J. Cameron

Cameron, Donald J. 70, originally of New York and a long-time Chicago resident, died Friday, June 25 of cancer. Mr. Cameron served for 12 years as a volunteer at Children's Memorial Hospital after retiring from a 33 year career with the New York Life Insurance Co. He was a board member for the SOCS (Staehely-O'Malley Cancer Survivor) Foundation, an organization of cancer survivors supporting cancer research. Mr. Cameron served in the United States Marine Corp. from 1954-1956, achieving the final rank of First Lieutenant. He was a graduate of Fordham University. Survivors include ex-wife, Eileen (Benson); son, Allen; daughter, Christine; first cousins, Grace Bella and Winifred Baxter; numerous other relatives and close friends and loving caretakers, Tom and Terri Houlahan of Beloit, Wisc. and Tom and Kim Keefe of Gurnee, Ill. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on July 17 at St. Gertrude's Catholic Church, 1420 W. Granville Ave., Chicago. Because Mr. Cameron donated his remains to medical science, no visitation is planned. In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted at the funeral mass and distributed to organizations engaged in the fight against cancer.
